Mr. Bastian - CTE, The Health Sciences
Hi. My name is Harold Bastian. I teach Health Education and Health Science Theory. I am a certified paramedic with 28 years of experience. I worked for twenty years on an ambulance and eight years in a medical clinic specializing in chronic wound care and hyperbaric medicine. I am a certified hyperbaric specialist and also certified by the American Heart Association to teach Basic Life Support (CPR for the healthcare provider) and Heartsaver CPR, AED, and first aid training. I am excited to be here and expect great success from our students!
Students in the Health Science Theory class will learn knowledge and skills in areas of healthcare that will assist them in future employment or further academic study. We will extensively cover the human anatomy. Students will learn about the history of medicine and explore potential career pathways in the healthcare industry. Students will learn and practice basic first aid techniques and checking basic vital signs. Basic Life Support will be incorporated in my health science theory class giving students a chance to become CPR certified. The goal for the Health Science Technology classes here at WOS High School is to have students certified in EMT, CNA, phlebotomy, or pharmacy technician by the time they graduate. We collaborate with Lamar State College-Orange to provide the students with these certifications.
Students in the Health Education classes will learn knowledge and skills that will help them make healthy life choices. This will arm the students with life skills that will help them live long, healthy, and happy lives. Heartsaver CPR, AED, and First Aid will be incorporated into my advanced health class. We have the goal of having every graduating senior of West Orange-Stark High School CPR certified by the time they graduate.
